His raggedy brand of music is informed by the era of 78 rpm records, juke-joints, and street performers. He composes a lot of his own songs and has a knack for re-working old obscure tunes. Rob Avsharian ( Percussion) is a native of Ann Arbor and a graduate of North Texas State U. Rob has recorded and/ or performed with the group Snarkey Puppy, Ralphe Armstrong and the Grammy Award winning group Brave Combo. He has also performed on National Public radio’s World Café Live. Aaron Jonah Lewis is an acclaimed multi-instrumentalist, performer and educator. Lewis has appeared on dozens of recordings from bluegrass and old time to traditional jazz. In addition to Fiddle he also plays and teaches banjo, mandolin and guitar. He is currently based in Detroit. Bassist Serge Van der Voo lived and played on both Amsterdam and Chicago before returning to Michigan Ross Huff plays twice weekly in Ann Arbor while maintaining a docket of Horn section engagements in every style of music. We will also discuss the role of the banjo in a jam setting as well as how to play along to a tune you’ve never heard before in your life. [][] Old Time Fiddle by Ear: In this workshop Aaron Jonah Lewis will teach old time fiddle by ear. The old time fiddle styles of the Appalachian mountains are characterized by their syncopated bowing patterns and driving rhythms. The workshop will be spent discussing musical and technical aspects and learning a tune. This workshop is aimed at people who can already play their fiddle/violin but will be taught by ear so you don’t need to read music.

The Blind Swine Speakeasy, the museum’s first exhibit that explores new ways to bring local history and culture to the community, can be described as a cross between an event and exhibit. The raw space, once used as a garage, is a perfect fit for a Prohibition-era speakeasy that tackles the complex issues around the 18th amendment –all while enjoying music and a, now legal, beverage. To add to the authentic 1930s era speakeasy experience, the yet to be renovated space will not be air-conditioned and has concrete floors and low lighting. The museum’s staff explains that speakeasies in rural areas were often called The Blind Pig. These entertainment establishments used farm animals as attractions (or cover!) and guests were “offered” a “beverage” with the ticket price. The drawing of the swine in the logo for the museum’s exhibit comes from the local breeder, Carl Ruebush, who was well-known in the late 1920s for his Chester White Swine. The museum has a few items from his business in its collection and these will be on display in the speakeasy. Much like the prohibition era speakeasy, music will be part of the exhibit. For the June 1st opening, Jeff Holtz will provide a program and play the music of the 1920s and 30s, followed by guitarist, Bill Maakestad who, starting at 5:30, will play his renditions of a few favorite tunes from the time. On June 15th The George Turner Trio will play two sets starting at 5:00 pm. More details about upcoming music and activities taking place at the speakeasy will be announced, along with the password, on the museum’s Facebook page, Twitter feed and website. Visitors can enter the exhibit through the museum’s “back door” located on the south side of the building if they have the password. In addition to viewing the artifacts on display, guests can enjoy a cash bar and listen to music from the era. There is a suggested $5 donation at the door. Our location: ProMedica opened its new headquarters in a renovated Steam Plant in 2017. But the building has had an important place along the city’s downtown skyline, as well as in its history. Established in 1896 as the Water Street Station, the building was one of the city’s electric utility companies. Later it became the Toledo Edison Steam Plant, and provided steam heat to downtown buildings. The facility was retired in 1985 and remained vacant for over 30 years. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2003. For Bluegrass & Green Acres we’ll be using its two-story reception and atrium, which showcase the original building while providing a modern space for employees and visitors. Entertainment: We have put together a powerhouse bluegrass trio as entertainment for the 2019 Bluegrass & Green Acres (and our artwork is homage to the new band)! Guest artists from previous events will debut at Bluegrass & Green Acres: Eric Lambert (guitar) – Chicago-area native Lambert mixes feel-good Americana infused with bluegrass, blues, rock and soul.
